Marte R. Gómez was a Mexican politician belonging to the Institutional Revolutionary Party from the northern border state of Tamaulipas. Born in Ciudad Reynosa on July 4, 1896, Gómez studied agricultural and hydraulic engineering at the Mexican national agricultural school at Chapingo. During his career he occupied many elected and appointed offices including deputy and senator in the Mexican Congress and governor of the State of Tamaulipas. Serving as secretary of agriculture during the presidency of Manuel Ávila Camacho, Gómez Segura was the only member of the cabinet to oppose the collaboration of the Mexican government in the infamous bracero program. He also wrote extensively about agriculture and agricultural reform.
