Gomez Martínez, Miguel Angel

Gomez Martínez, Miguel Angel, Spanish conductor; b. Granada, Sept. 17, 1949. After piano studies with his mother, he enrolled at the Granada Cons. He also studied composition, piano, and violin at the Madrid Cons., and later attended the conducting classes of Boult and Leinsdorf at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood; then studied with Markevitch in Madrid and Swarowsky in Vienna. He was music director of the St. Pölten Stadttheater (1971-72) and principal conductor of the Lucerne Stadttheater (1972-74). In 1973 he conducted at the Deutsche Opera in Berlin, and was subsequently its resident conductor (1974-77). In 1976 he was made resident conductor at the Vienna State Opera; also conducted in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, London (at Covent Garden), Geneva, and Paris. In 1980 he made his U.S. debut, conducting at the Houston Grand Opera. From 1984 to 1987 he was principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinfonica de Radiotelevisión Espan͂ola in Madrid. He was artistic director and chief conductor of the Teatro Lérico Nacional in Madrid from 1985 to 1991. In 1990 he became Generalmusikdirektor in Mannheim. He then served as chief conductor of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki (1993-96), and of the Hamburg Sym. Orch. (1993-2000).
