Goldemberg, José (1928–)

A Brazilian environmental and energy expert, José Goldemberg received a doctorate in nuclear physics at the University of São Paulo, where he rose to full professor and served as rector from 1986 to 1989. He has presided over national scientific societies and the State of São Paulo's energy company. Under the Collor government (1990–1992), he was secretary of the environment and helped plan the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. As minister of education, he obtained autonomy for federally funded universities. In 2000 he and three other internationally known scientists won the Volvo Environmental Prize for their comprehensive study of future world energy needs. He is active in the study of climate change.
