El Señor de los Temblores

El Señor de los Temblores, or Taytacha Temblores (Lord of Quakes), one of the principal objects of devotion in Cuzco. It is a carved image of the crucified Christ, popularly believed to have been sent as a gift by Charles V but most probably fashioned by local artists. Originally known as the Lord of a Good Death, after the earthquake of 1650 the figure became known as the Lord of Quakes. Since 1741, its procession has taken place on Monday of Holy Week. Over time the image of Christ has become so darkened by the smoke and heat of the candles that accompany it in procession that it now appears to be an Indian or a black Christ. Declared the patron of Cuzco, the image is housed in the cathedral. The procession, accompanied by city officials, is a major tourist attraction.
