de la Fuente, Juan Ramón (1951–)

Mexican physician and educator Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez is the son of Dr. Ramon del la Fuente Muñiz, a leading psychiatrist, and Dr. Beatriz Ramírez, an authority on pre-Hispanic art. He graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and completed a master's degree in psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He worked as a researcher at the National Institute of Nutrition and the Mexico Institute of Psychiatry before becoming the director of the health research program and the science program at UNAM. After teaching many years at the university, he was appointed dean of the UNAM School of Medicine from 1991 to 1994. In 1994 president Ernesto Zedillo (1994–2000) appointed him as his first secretary of health, a position he held until he was selected as the president of UNAM in November 1999. He served a full four-year term, and was selected for a second term from 2003 through 2007.
