Coll y Toste, Cayetano (1850–1930)

Cayetano Coll y Toste (b. 30 November 1850; d. 19 November 1930), Puerto Rican physician, politician, historian. Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Coll y Toste was educated in both Puerto Rico and Barcelona, Spain. Although he practiced medicine and wrote articles in that field, Coll y Toste is best known for his historiographical contributions. After retiring from the practice of medicine, he wrote numerous biographies of distinguished Puerto Ricans, compiled legends, and published the Boletín histórico de Puerto Rico, a multivolume collection of documents on the island's history. In 1913 he was given the title of official historian of Puerto Rico. Coll y Toste died in Madrid, Spain.
