Civil Guard

The national police force was established by a Spanish mission to Peru in 1924 and reorganized under the Ministry of the Interior in 1986–1987 as the General Police (Policía General). There are fifty-nine commands in five police regions and a total force of 42,537. The Civil Guard provides patrols and law enforcement, with other police units responsible for prison and border duty. Along with the Security Police (Policía de Seguridad) and the Technical Police (Policía Técnica), it is part of the National Police (Policía Nacional).
