Basso Maglio, Vicente (1889–1961)

Vicente Basso Maglio (b. 22 December 1889; d. 15 September 1961), Uruguayan poet, writer, journalist, and editor. His career in journalism began when he was an editor for La Reforma, El Día, and La Razón, all in Montevideo. Subsequently he was director of El espectador and its subsidiary broadcasting system, Difusoras del Uruguay. Basso Maglio's most acclaimed poetry collection, Canción de los pequeños círculos y de los grandes horizontes (1927), features the poet's transcendental, mystical comprehension of the relationship between man and God. His dense, hermetic expression sometimes reveals an excessive confidence in abstract symbols to communicate the complex web of relationships linking inner and outer reality. Other works by Basso Maglio include the acclaimed La expresión heróica (1928) and Tragedia de la imagen (1930), a work on modern art.
