Barnola, Pedro Pablo (1908–1986)

Pedro Pablo Barnola (b. 28 August 1908; d. 12 January 1986), Venezuelan writer and educator. As a student at the Academy San Ignacio de Loyola in Caracas, Barnola was the first Venezuelan to join the Jesuits after their reestablishment in the country. He completed his studies first in Europe (1925–1932) and later in the United States (1935–1940). Ordained a priest in 1938, he dedicated himself to teaching at the Academy San Ignacio. He was director of the magazine SIC, rector of the Andrés Bello Catholic University, editorial director of the Obras completas de Andrés Bello (1951), and member of the editorial commission for the Obras completas de Rafael María Baralt. He was a regular member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language and an outstanding defender of the purity of Castilian Spanish. He collaborated with Professor Ángel Rosenblat on the first volume of the Diccionario de Venezolanismos (1983). He is the author of numerous works of literary criticism. The principal ones include: Altorrelieve de la literatura venezolana (1970); Estudios crítico-literarios (1945, 1953, 1971); and Raíz y sustancia de la civilización latinoamericana (1953).
