Jove another name for Jupiter; the name comes from Latin Jov-, stem of Old Latin Jovis, replaced later by Jupiter. The dated English exclamation by Jove is recorded from the late 16th century.
Jove but laughs at lovers' perjury proverbial saying, mid 16th century; the Greek poet Hesiod (c.700 bc) has, ‘since that time he [Zeus] attached no penalty for men to an oath taken in the secret works of Aphrodite’, and the Roman poet Tibullus (c.50–19 bc) in his Elegies has, ‘Jove laughs at lovers' perjuries.’
