Dunmow flitch a side of bacon awarded at Great Dunmow in Essex on Whit Monday to any married couple who will swear that they have not quarrelled or repented of their marriage vows for at least a year and a day. The custom was instituted in Great Dunmow; the earliest evidence for it is 1244, though its origin may be earlier.
