SIDELIGHTS: Anthony Taylor Dunn told CA: "I began writing poetry when I was working in Boston as a banker. I participated in Harold Bond's workshops at the Blacksmith House in Cambridge. Many of the narrative poems I wrote for my book, Sunbathing on the Bottom of the Atlantic, are set in Boston. I suppose I began writing out of a kind of psychic pain that forced me to break the silence and start writing. Poetry seemed to be the most direct means of precise expression because of its condensation of words. One never knows where poems come from—out of the air, perhaps—I simply chip away at the words that don't belong there to reveal the poem underneath. The overall tone of my collection is one of dark humor, playing against the themes of freedom, or lack of it, the act of writing poetry, and death. The styles of poetry I am drawn towards and like to write are narrative, free verse. I enjoy writing in the early morning, say around five, beginning in the dark, and by the time the sunlight reaches my desk, I've come up with something to work on."
