Cabot
Cabot the name of two Italian explorers and navigators, the elder of whom, John Cabot (c.1450–c.98), sailed from Bristol in 1497 in search of Asia, but in fact landed on the mainland of North America (the site of his arrival is uncertain). Returning to Bristol, he undertook a second expedition in 1498 from which he never returned.
His son Sebastian Cabot (c.1475–1557) accompanied his father on his voyage in 1497 and made further voyages after the latter's death, most notably to Brazil and the River Plate (1526).
