belay †beset, surround OE.; (naut.) fasten a running rope round a pin, etc. XVI. OE. beleċġan = OHG. bileggen (G. belegen), f. BE- + leċġan LAY. From XVI a new formation; the current (naut.) sense seems to be after Du. beleggen.
