Vienna, treaty of, 1731. By the second treaty of Vienna of March 1731, Britain guaranteed Maria Theresa's succession to the Habsburg dominions under the pragmatic sanction, while the Emperor Charles VI agreed to wind up the Ostend Company, a competitor to the East India Company. The Austro-British understanding in the War of the Spanish Succession was thereby restored. But when Maria Theresa was attacked in 1740, British assistance was far from whole-hearted.
