Harlaw, battle of, 1411. Donald, lord of the Isles, engaged in a dispute over the earldom of Ross, which he claimed by right of his wife, raised considerable forces, occupied Inverness, and advanced towards Aberdeen. On 24 July he was met near Inverurie, 20 miles north-west of Aberdeen, by the earl of Mar, supported by townsfolk from Aberdeen. The result of the encounter was variously reported, but Donald failed to obtain the earldom.
