Crotoy, battle of

Crotoy, battle of, 1347. In 1346 Edward III laid siege to Calais with a naval blockade. On 25 June 1347 a French fleet of some 40 vessels bringing relief was scattered at Crotoy, at the mouth of the Somme to the south. Calais surrendered on 3 August and remained in English hands for more than 200 years.
