Crothers, Connie

Crothers, Connie , jazz pianist; b. Palo Alto, Calif., June 2, 1941. She was raised in Calif., but moved in N.Y in 1962; she spent the next decade and a half working with legendary pianist Lennie Tristano. After his death in 1979, she became executor of his estate and also co-founded a foundation in his name. Since the early 1970s, Crothers has been making capable, often impressive albums and showcasing her own pieces rather than reworking standards, although on solo dates she has demonstrated her interpretative abilities. Since the late 1980s, she’s worked extensively with saxophonist Lenny Popkin. Although she is a disciple of Tristano, Crothers’s style consists more of chordal clusters than of his long lines.
