Akeman Street
Akeman Street. This Roman road linked Cirencester and Verulamium, running across the south midlands via Alchester (Oxon.). It was probably laid out in the 50s ad. The modern name derives from the Anglo-Saxon words meaning ‘oak-man’. No Roman name is known.
