NEW YORK CITY, CAPTURE OF
NEW YORK CITY, CAPTURE OF. Nine years after losing the city to the English, the Dutch sent a squadron of twenty-three ships, under the joint command of Cornelius Evertsen Jr. and Jacob Binckes, to recapture New York. On 28 July 1673 the fleet appeared off Sandy Hook. The fleet approached the fort on 30 July, giving Manning and his hastily assembled corps of volunteers a half an hour to yield the fort. When the time expired, the Dutch fleet opened fire. The fort held out for four hours and then surrendered. Briefly rechristened New Orange, the city of New York was returned to England in 1674 pursuant to the Treaty of Westminster.
