Vondel, Joost von den
Vondel, Joost von den (1587–1679) Dutch poet and dramatist. Vondel struggled against the handicaps of humble birth, limited education, and religious persecution to produce outstanding work based on biblical and classical sources. Of his trilogy of plays, Lucifer (1654), Adam in Exile (1664), and Noah (1667), the first –a tragedy – is generally regarded as his masterpiece. He also wrote in various poetic genres.
