Rudolf II (1552–1612) Holy Roman Emperor (1576–1612). Son and successor of Emperor Maximilian II, he moved the imperial capital to Prague, which became a brilliant centre of the Renaissance. His opposition to Protestantism caused conflict in Bohemia and Hungary. A Hungarian revolt was suppressed by his brother and eventual successor, Matthias, to whom he ceded Hungary, Austria, Moravia (1608), and Bohemia (1611).
