Prescott, John Leslie

Prescott, John Leslie (1938– ) British statesman, deputy prime minister (1997– ). Prescott became a Labour MP in 1970, and between 1975 and 1979 he simultaneously served as a member of the European Parliament. He joined the shadow cabinet in 1983. In 1994, he became Tony Blair's deputy. His ‘on-the-stump’ campaigning helped Labour win a landslide victory in the 1997 general election.
