Prescott College's mission is to educate students of diverse ages and backgrounds to understand, thrive in, and enhance the world community and environment. Prescott regards learning as a continuing process and strives to provide an education that enables students to live productive lives while achieving a balance between self-fulfillment and service to others. Students are encouraged to think critically and act ethically, with sensitivity to both the human community and the biosphere. The College's philosophy stresses experiential learning and self-direction within an interdisciplinary curriculum.

Prescott College is an independent liberal arts college that grants Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Master of Arts (M.A.), and Ph.D. degrees. The College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The teacher education program is approved by the Arizona State Board of Education and the Arizona State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification. The Association of Experiential Education also accredits the College.

Distance Learning Program

Students maintain their personal and professional lives while earning a degree. The program is self-designed, student-centered, and flexible. The programs require very limited residency. The College offers ongoing support from faculty members and other students.

Delivery Media

Students in the B.A. Adult Degree Program work with mentors (local professionals) in their home communities and core faculty members at Prescott College on an individualized course of study. Students are required to be in Arizona for two 3-day weekends during their program.

Faculty-chosen graduate advisers assist students in the Master of Arts Program in planning, executing, and evaluating their graduate study programs. All graduate students must attend two 3-day colloquia per semester.

Ph.D. Program students are guided by committees that consist of a core faculty member, 2 affiliate faculty members, and an external affiliate faculty member. Doctoral students attend thirty-seven days of residency over the course of the four-year program.

Programs of Study

B.A. students, working with faculty members, design degrees in areas such as environmental studies, human ser vices, management, sustainable community development, and teacher education. Teacher education students may complete all courses leading to Arizona teaching credentials in elementary, secondary, or special education while earning their bachelor's degree. Students may also complete post-bachelor's teacher certification. Students in human services generally design concentrations in counseling psychology, human services, or psychology, depending on their career goals. Environmental studies students have earned competences in agroecology, environmental education, environmental resource stewardship, sustainable living, and many other areas. The sustainable community development program prepares students to plan and implement measures that build and strengthen communities. This includes studies in business, the environment, governments, social systems, and values. The Management Program combines traditional leadership theories and practices that are common in virtually any organization with innovative thinking. In addition, the curriculum focuses on the study of complex human factors involved in organizational decision making.

M.A. students may design programs in the five broadly defined programs of study listed below or in other areas of personal interest. The adventure educa tion program provides students the opportunity to pursue studies that cover a range of outdoor and adventure-based programming applications. Areas of study may include community recreation, corrections, guiding and outfit ting, school and college curricula, and therapeutic adventure. Counseling and psychology students may prepare for certification or licensure in professional counseling or marriage and family therapy or in a nonclinical, more theoretical, aspect of the field. Counseling and psychology students focus on specialties such as adventure-based counseling, child development, equine- assisted mental health, expressive arts therapies, forensic psychology, grief counseling, school guidance counsel ing, and somatic psychology. Education students seek degree concentrations with a wide variety of emphases, including bilingual, early childhood, elementary, environmental, experiential, secondary, and special education; curriculum design; English as a second language; literacy; pedagogy; and school renewal. Environmental studies graduates have completed programs in such diverse fields as agroecology, conservation biology, earth sciences, ecological design, ecological restoration, ecology, environmental education, environmental ethics and philosophy, environmental history, ethnobotany, marine studies, natural history, and natural resource management. The humanities program provides opportunities for students to develop programs within a wide range of interests. These range from cultural studies, philosophy and religious studies, and social sciences to the arts and business.

Ph.D. students design their own studies within the area of sustainability education. The four-year program consists of a year each of foundational courses, individually designed theory courses, practicum, and a doctoral dissertation.

Student Services

The B.A. program accepts transfer credits earned at regionally accredited institutions with a grade of C or higher. The B.A. program also offers credit for life experience to qualified students. Prescott College does not transfer credits into its graduate programs.

Students in Tucson and southern Arizona who are interested in the B.A. or M.A. programs should contact the Tucson office. All other geographic areas may work with the Prescott admissions office.
