Daggy Youth/Student Scholarships (Professional Development/Scholarship)

Scholarships will be awarded to qualified candidates based on their personal statement.Criteria: Applicants must be young individuals (ages 14-29) who are interested in learning about Thomas Merton. Qualif.: General studies. Focus: To enable young people to participate in an International Thomas Merton Society Conference. Purpose:

Funds Avail.: Covering all the cost (except transportation) of attendance at the Eleventh Conference of the ITMS. To Apply: Applicants must submit a statement explaining why they are interested in learning more about Thomas Merton and how they think they would benefit from attending the ITMS Conference; must have the recommendation from a youth minister, campus minister, pastor, teacher, or other qualified adult. Complete application, including the recommendation must be submitted to: scholarship committee chair, Dr. Virginia Ratigan Religious Studies Department, Rosemont College, 1400 Montgomery Ave., Rosemont, PA 19010. Deadline: March 15.

Remarks: Scholarships honor the late Robert E. Daggy, founding member and second President of the ITMS.

William H. Shannon Fellowships (Professional Development/Fellowship)

Purpose: To enable qualified researchers to visit the Thomas Merton Center archives. Focus: General studies. Qualif.: Applicants must be researchers without academic affiliation, and students and younger scholars, including those engaged in research for theses and dissertation; must be members of the ITMS. Criteria: Awards will be based on (1) the quality of the proposal submitted and on (2) the need for consulting archival materials at the site proposed.

Funds Avail.: $750. Number Awarded: 5. To Apply: Applicants must submit a detailed proposal of 500-750 words explaining the subject and goals of the applicant's research and the rationale for consulting primary sources at the Merton collection selected by the applicant; must have a letter of recommendation from a scholar familiar with the applicant's qualifications and research interest; must have a proposed expense budget. Deadline: March 15. Remarks: Awards are named in honor of William H. Shannon, founding President of the International Thomas Merton Society.
