Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to juniors and seniors in college who are majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, metallurgy, or materials science. Selection is based on career interest in surface finishing, scholarship, achievement, motivation, and potential. Financial need is not a factor. Deadline for Receipt: April of each year. Additional Information: Recipients are encouraged to submit a report or paper at the conclusion of the award period. They must be in school full time during the academic year the scholarship is received.

Applicants must have completed at least 1 year of college. Students majoring in related science or engineering disciplines are considered if they demonstrate a strong academic interest in materials science. International students are also eligible. Selection is based on academic achievement; interest in the field (including knowledge of metallurgy or materials engineering, activities, jobs, and potential for a related career); and personal qualities (such as motivation, social values, goals, and maturity). Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to full-time students majoring in metallurgy, materials science, or metallurgical engineering as preparation for a career in the iron and steel or steel-related industries. Other majors are considered if the application is accompanied by a letter from an academic advisor, on official letterhead, regarding the program's preparation for advancement of steel product production, steel application, or the use of steel in material design. Interest in a career in ferrous-related industries should be demonstrated by internship, co-op, or related experiences and/or demonstrable plans to pursue such experience during college. Applicants must be a student member of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). They may apply as early as their freshman year in college. Juniors and seniors should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in their major; undeclared students should have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Applicants must submit 1) a current resume; 2) a statement of their philosophy of their academic discipline and personal and professional goals; 3) a 300-word essay on why they are interested in working in the steel industry and what they will contribute to enhancing the well-being of the industry; and 4) letters of recommendation. Applicants must be accepted at, planning to attend, or currently enrolled at an accredited college or university with a major in astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer programming, computer technology, earth science, electrical engineering, engineering, engineering technology, environmental science, geography, geology, information systems, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, microbiology, physical science, physics, or another field approved by the scholarship committee. Along with their application, they must submit a 500-word essay on the reasons for their interest in their field of study, their current career goals and objectives, and the positive attributes they feel they will bring to their professional career. Selection is based on overall academic achievement, with strong consideration given to the essay and extracurricular activities. Deadline for Receipt: January of each year. Title of Award: Light Metals Division Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Engineering, Materials; Engineering, Metallurgical; Materials research/science; Metallurgy Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: 3 each year. Funds Available: The stipend is $4,000 plus a travel stipend of up to $600 (so the recipient can attend the annual meeting of the society to accept the award). In addition, recipients are given the opportunity of selecting up to $300 in LMD-sponsored conference proceedings or textbooks to be donated to their college or university library in their name and up to $400 in books for themselves. Duration: 1 year.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to undergraduate members of the society majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on both traditional and emerging light metals. Applicants may be from any country. Selection is based on academic achievement, school and community activities, work experience, leadership, a personal profile statement, and letters of recommendation. Preference is given to students in their junior or senior year who are enrolled full time and to applicants who have participated in a relevant industrial co-op program. Henderson Industrial Minerals Memorial Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Economics; Engineering, Mining and Mineral; Geology; Metallurgy Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College, Graduate Number Awarded: 1 or more each year. Funds Available: A total of $2,000 is awarded each year. Duration: 1 year.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must 1) be majoring in geology, minerals engineering, mining engineering, or mineral economics at a 4-year college or university, 2) have completed at least their sophomore year in college, 3) be a U.S. citizen, and 4) be a student member of the society. They must be of good character, be of sound health, have demonstrated scholastic aptitude (GPA of 3.0 or higher), and be able to demonstrate financial need. Candidates for these scholarships may be proposed by any of the following: mining and minerals companies; local sections of the society; state mining institutes; high school principals; industrial minerals associations; manufacturers of mining and processing equipment; minerals research organizations; or geology and mining engineering departments at colleges or universities. Funds Available: The first-place recipient is given $2,000 (plus travel to the society's annual meeting). The other winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Duration: 1 year.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to student members of the society who have completed their sophomore year in college; are enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program that has required course work in minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, and/or metallurgical engineering; are U.S. citizens; and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Only 1 candidate from each eligible department may be nominated each academic year.
