Fashion Institute of Technology was founded in 1944. It is accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It first offered distance learning courses in 1998. In fall 2003, there were 500 students enrolled in distance learning courses. Institutionally administered financial aid is available to distance learners.

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) offers a variety of industry-specific courses including Advertising and Promotion, Introduction to the Fashion Industry, Product Development, Merchandise Planning and Control, Import Buying, Fashion Business Practices, and Fundamentals of Textiles, as well as liberal arts courses such as History of Western Art and Civilization, Modern Art, and English as a Second Language. Other online offerings include Starting a Small Business, Introduction to Business Law, Photography Portfolio Development for the World Wide Web, and Information Systems in Business Management.
