Villalpando, Juan Bautista

Villalpando, Juan Bautista (1552–1608). Spanish Jesuit architect and writer. A pupil of Herrera, he was also influenced by Jerónimo del Prado (1547–95), with whom he investigated Solomon's Temple through a study of Ezekiel's writings, and argued that Classical architecture derived from the Solomonic Temple, and therefore from God. His In Ezechielem explanationes et apparatus urbis ac Templi Hierosolymitani came out in 1596 with subsequent volumes in 1604. He completed the Jesuit Church, Córdoba (1578), designed the main portal of Baeza Cathedral (1585), and built the College of Saint Hermenegildo, Seville (1587), all Classical, and all restrained.
