Meissonnier, Juste-Aurèle

Meissonnier, Juste-Aurèle (1695–1750). Born in Turin, Italy, of French descent, he settled in Paris c.1714, where he established himself as an interior designer and architect, eschewing straight lines, symmetry, and blandness in his polished Rococo designs. The ingenious house for Léon de Bréthous, Bayonne, France (1733), demonstrated his mastery of irregular plans and his fondness for sweeping curves. Most of his work has been destroyed, but can be studied in Œuvre de Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, published by Gabriel Huquier (1695–1772) in c.1750.
