Farrand, Beatrix Cadwaladar Jones
Farrand, Beatrix Cadwaladar Jones (1872–1959). American landscape-architect. The niece of the writer Edith Wharton (1862–1937), who taught her about European gardens, she established her practice in NYC in 1895. She merged Italianate and English garden design, as at Princeton University, NJ (1913–41), and Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, DC (1922–33). She designed The Eyrie, Seal Harbour, ME (1926–c.1939—which includes a moon-gate (di xue) and other allusions to the gardens of East Asia), the grounds of Dartington Hall, Devon (1933–8), and the campus of Yale University, New Haven, CT (1924–47).
