Duthoit, Edmond-Armand-Marie

Duthoit, Edmond-Armand-Marie (1837–89). French architect. A pupil of Viollet-le-Duc, he acquired a formidable architectural eclectic vocabulary from his studies of historic buildings. His most celebrated design is the colourful basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Brebières, at Albert, Somme (1884–96). His Château du Roquetaillade, near Langon, in the Gironde (1864–70), continued work begun by Viollet-le-Duc, but it is mostly Duthoit's: it is an exotic confection of Gothic, but leavened with Arabic and Byzantine themes, continuing a trend he had evolved at the reconstruction of the C15 Château d'Arragori, near Hendaye, Basses-Pyrénées (c.1864–79). It is almost as luxuriant as contemporary work by Burges.
