1. Piece of board cut with a profile resembling a corbel or console, used to support a shelf, or a larger timber cut similarly used to support overhanging eaves.
2. Similar board, sometimes further carved, under the returned nosing of each step on the outer string of a stair, sometimes resembling the sides of consoles or modillions.
