Berty, Thomas (c.1485–1555). English master-mason. He was engaged on the buildings of the Priory of St Mary Overie, Southwark, including the top stage of what is now the tower of Southwark Cathedral. In the 1530s he worked on the vaults of the presbytery aisles of Winchester Cathedral. Berty was in charge of the Royal building-works at Calshot Castle and Cowes Castle, IoW, and in the 1540s he built Hurst Castle. He seems to have been a key figure in the transformation of Perpendicular Gothic into Tudor Renaissance, as can be seen in Winchester Cathedral, where the chantry-chapels of Bishops Fox and Gardiner show the change in the 1520s and 1530s.
