smurf A type of distributed denial of service attack created by sending one or more packets with forged source addresses to the broadcast address of a network. If the local router forwards these packets then every machine on the network may send a response to the computer whose address was forged: each forged packet may generate 254 or more replies, overloading the victim computer.
