real type (type real) A data type comprising values that have a fractional part and approximate to the mathematical real numbers. They can be operated on by real-number arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root. Usually the representations do not include transcendental real numbers but are limited to a subset of rational numbers. See also floating-point notation.
