cholesteatoma (koli-sti-ă-toh-mă) n. a skin-lined sac containing debris from dead skin cells that grows from the eardrum into the mastoid bone. Unless treated (by mastoidectomy), it can carry infection to the brain, causing meningitis or a cerebral abscess.
