WILEY, John P., Jr. 1936-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born May 22, 1936, in Rahway (one source says Elizabeth), NJ; died of congestive heart failure February 22, 2004, in Severna Park, MD. Editor and author. Wiley is best remembered as the former science editor of Smithsonian Magazine. Raised primarily in Aruba because of his father's work in the oil industry, he graduated from Fordham University in 1958 with a B.S. After serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve, his first civilian job was as a reporter in New York for the Middletown Record. He later worked for United Press International for a year before joining the staff at Physics Today in 1968. This was followed by three years as an associate editor for Natural History before he was hired by Smithsonian in 1973. As a member of the editorial board, Wiley was in charge of articles on the physical and natural science; he also authored the column "Phenomena: Comments and Notes." He remained in this post until his retirement in 2001. A collection of his columns was published as Natural High (1993).
