SIDELIGHTS: Educator, historian, and political journalist Jerzy Tomaszewski was born in 1930 in Radomsko, Poland. Associate professor, then professor at the University of Warsaw during the political upheaval of Poland, Tomaszewski sought through his writings to put social and political events into perspective for himself as well as his students. Two such works are The Polish Economy in the Twentieth Century and The Socialist Regimes of East Central Europe: Their Establishment and Consolidation, 1944–1967. He continues this work as a member of the editorial board for the Institute for Polish-Jewish Studies' annual journal Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry.

The Polish Economy in the Twentieth Century was a collaboration with Zbigniew Landau. Ljubo Sirc, reviewing the volume in the Times Literary Supplement, stated that "the authors make it perfectly clear that the collapse of the Polish economy was not the consequence of an ordinary business cycle and was not imported from abroad, but was the product of a wrong economic policy." A reviewer in Foreign Affairs described The Socialist Regimes of East Central Europe as "a factual presentation of Eastern Europe's main political events." Carla Randolph, in Slavic Review, called the book "a comparativist's dream…. Tomaszewski has whetted our appetites for a comprehensive conclusion, one that would show the relevance of the period addressed in this work to events in the 1980s." Randolph noted that "the structure and format of this work are entirely usable."
