CAREER:

Trinity College, Hartford, CT, 1959-1996, became professor emeritus. Military service: United States Army, served during World War II.

SIDELIGHTS:

The late Paul Smith was widely respected for his expertise on the American author Ernest Hemingway. He founded the Hemingway Society, an international organization dedicated to study and discussion of the author. His book A Reader's Guide to the Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway offers detailed information on the composition, background, publication, and criticism of every one of the short stories Hemingway published during his lifetime. Robert W. Lewis, writing in the Hemingway Review, called it "a remarkable work of scholarship" and an "extremely important addition" to studies on Hemingway. Smith's personal papers are held at the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachusetts.
