Arlene Sanders is an American fiction writer. Born in Virginia, Sanders grew up as a self-confessed Southerner. After earning a bachelor of arts degree with honors, she continued her studies at the graduate level at Johns Hopkins University. Sanders adopted a Vietnamese girl and two Korean girls, and she raised them on her farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Sanders began writing fiction at a young age and continued into adulthood, publishing a number of stories in periodicals and literary journals, including Cantaraville, Dos Passos Review, Dublin Quarterly, Edgar Literary Magazine, Georgia State University Review, Iconoclast, MacGuffin, Mindprints, New Works Review, Perigee, Pindeldyboz, Sanskrit, Slow Trains, Sound and Literary Art Book, Southern Hum, Sugar Mule, Taj Mahal Review, Terra Incognita, Tertulia Magazine, Willard & Maple, Writers Post Journal, and Cairn.

Sanders is a member of a number of professional writing organizations, including the Authors Guild, Appalachian Writers Association, Poetry Society of Virginia, and the Emerging Writers Network. In addition to the individual stories she has published, she has published the short-story collection Tiger Burning Bright. Her writing was given recognition when one of her short stories won first prize in the ByLine magazine competition for best new talent short story. Two of her short stories were also nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2006 and 2007.
