Sanderling, Thomas

Sanderling, Thomas , German conductor, son of Kurt Sanderling; b. Novosibirsk, Russia, Oct. 2, 1942. He studied at the Leningrad Cons. and at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in East Berlin. In 1962 he made his conducting debut with the (East) Berlin Sym. Orch. After serving as music director in Sondershausen (1963–64) and Reichenbach (1964–66), he was music director in Halle (from 1966). In 1978 he became permanent guest conductor of the (East) Berlin State Opera. In 1979 he made a highly successful debut at the Vienna State Opera conducting Die Zauberflöte, and subsequently was engaged by many major opera houses and orchs. in Europe and abroad. From 1984 to 1986 he was artistic director of the Amsterdam Phil. He was music director of the Osaka Sym. Orch. from 1992.
