PIPER, Anson C(onant) 1918-2004

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born August 14, 1918, in Newton, MA; died of bladder cancer January 28, 2004, in Williamstown, MA. Educator and author. Piper was a former professor of foreign languages at Williams College in Massachusetts. With a gift for languages at a young age, he completed a B.A. in French and Spanish at Williams in 1940. This skill also proved valuable during World War II, when he was a Navy lieutenant in Europe. Returning home, he completed a master's degree in 1947 and a Ph.D. in Spanish in 1953, both at the University of Wisconsin. Piper always loved his home in Massachusetts, and he was on the faculty at Williams College from 1949 until his retirement as William Dwight Whitney Professor of Romance Languages in 1986; he was also head of the department from 1961 to 1971. In addition to contributing to many scholarly journals, Piper was the author of Asi es la vida (1958) and coauthor of Basic Portuguese Vocabulary (1968).
