PERSONAL: Born September 17, 1864, in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka); died April 29, 1933, in Sarnath, India. Religion: Buddhist

CAREER: Organizer of Buddhist schools and other Buddhist institutions in India, after 1884, assuming the religious name Anag_rika Dharmap_la; international speaker on behalf of Buddhism (including various visits to the United States), beginning 1888; Maha Bodhi Society, Calcutta, India, founder, 1891, founder of British chapter, c. 1926; ordained bhikkhu (monk), 1933.
