OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born 1944 in Pensacola, FL; died of a heart attack June 5, 2003, in Santa Barbara, CA. Novelist. Grimwood was a science-fiction and fantasy writer best known for his World Fantasy Award-winning novel Replay. His life parallels the hero in that tale in some ways. After attending Emory University and Bard College, he worked at a radio station as a news director, just like his novel's main character; ironically, he died in middle age of a heart attack, just like his main character. As an author Grimwood was notable for his interest in the themes of time and mortality, as well as environmentalism and telepathy. In Replay (1987), for example, his protagonist relives the same quarter of a century over and over again. Other novels by Grimwood include Breakthrough (1976), Elise (1977), The Voice Outside (1982), and Into the Deep (1995). He was planning a sequel to Replay when he died.
