SIDELIGHTS:

Bruce R. Gibbs is a writer, editor, and publisher who has also taught at several universities across the United States. He put these varied skills together for his 2002 self-published Giving Away the Keys: A Professor Unlocks the Secrets to College Success, a guide to help high school graduates succeed in college. Among the helpful tips Gibbs includes are such commonsense recommendations as arriving punctually at class and researching assignments online. He also covers such nonacademic factors as dating and its effect on study habits. Importantly, Gibbs imparts such advice from the point of view of an instructor. Savannah Fortune, writing in Blackgirl Magazine, felt the book would help students "make the most of [college]." Similar positive comments came from a Midwest Book Review contributor who found Giving Away the Keys to be a "superbly presented compendium of sound advice."

Gibbs told CA: "I chose to write a book on succeeding in college because as a college instructor I saw many students succeed and others fail. I wanted to write a guidebook of sorts to help students obtain their goal of receiving a college degree and to help them be successful."

Gibbs is also the founder and publisher of Real Dad Magazine, a periodical aimed at sharing child-rearing experiences and advice between fathers of all sorts, married, single, divorced, stay-at-home, or working. The magazine debuted in 2004.
