SIDELIGHTS:

Giles Carwyn is best known for the novel Heir of Autumn, which he wrote with Todd Fahnestock. It is the first in a series of books planned by the two writers, who have had a close relationship since meeting each other in high school. The main character is Brophy, the Heir of Autumn. When he is wrongly accused of a murder, a chain of events is set into motion that threatens not only his city-state, Ohnadarien, but all the lands around it as well. Brophy must unravel a long-unsolved mystery and outwit treacherous plots against him in order to try to restore order to his world. Booklist reviewer Frieda Murray approved of the novel's "well-drawn characters in a well-designed world," though she cautioned that the erotic content of the story makes it suitable only for older readers.

A Publishers Weekly writer noticed the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien on Heir of Autumn, stating that while the writing did not measure up to the standard set by Tolkien, it was still an enjoyable fantasy featuring "solid characterization." The "rich details" are a strong point of the book, according to Jackie Cassada in Library Journal.
