Carver, Robert

Scottish composer; b. 1487; d. after 1546. He was a Monk of Scone Abbey. He developed a melismatic style of composition, and wrote masses on the medieval song “L’Homme arme” and many motets, one of them in 19 independent parts. He is regarded as an equal of Dunstable in melodic and rhythmic excellence. Vol. 1 of his collected works was publ. by the American Inst. of Musicology, ed. by Denis Stevens, in 1959.
