Zagiba, Franz

Zagiba, Franz, eminent Austrian musicologist; b. Rosenau, Oct. 20, 1912; d. Vienna, Aug. 12,1977. He studied musicology with Dobroslav Orel and received training in Hungarian and Slavonic studies at the Univ. of Bratislava (Ph.D., 1937, with the diss. Denkmäler der Musik in den Franziskanerklöstern in der Ostslovakei; publ. in Prague, 1940, as Hudobné pamiatky frantiskánskych klástorov na vychodnom Slovensku)’, completed his Habilitation in 1944 at the Univ. of Vienna with his Geschichte der slowakischen Musik (publ, in Bratislava, 1943, as Dejiny slovenskj hudby od najstarsich cias az do reformácié). After serving as director of the musicological inst. of the Bratislava Academy of Sciences, he joined the faculty of the Univ. of Vienna in 1944, where he became a full prof, in 1972. In 1952 he founded the International Chopin Soc. His learned writings ranged from pre-medieval to 20^th-century music.
