Zafred, Mario
Zafred, Mario, Italian conductor, music critic, and composer; b. Trieste, Feb. 21, 1922; d. Rome, May 22, 1987. He was a pupil of Pizzetti at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. After serving as music critic of Unità (1949-56) and Giustizia (1956-63), he was active as a conductor. From 1968 to 1974 he was artistic director of the Rome Opera. In conformity with his Communist convictions, he composed in an accessible style.
