White, John (Reeves)

White, John (Reeves), American musicologist and conductor; b. Houston, Miss., May 2, 1924; d. N.Y., July 12, 1984. He studied at the Cincinnati Cons. (1941-43); also took courses at the Paris Cons. (1945). He obtained his M.A. at Colo. Coll. in 1948 and his Ph.D. at Ind. Univ. in 1952; he also received the degree of Dr. of Natural Philosophy at the Inst. of Neurophenomenology in Amherst, Mass. (1975). He held teaching posts at Colo. Coll. (1947-52), the Univ. of Richmond (1953-61), Ind. Univ. (1961-66; 1970-71), and Hunter Coll. of the City Univ. of N.Y. (from 1971). From 1966 to 1970 he conducted the N.Y. Pro Musica. White produced reconstructions of several medieval and Renaissance dramatic works. He ed. The Keyboard Tablature of Johannes of Lublin (6 vols., 1964-67), François Dandrieu: Harpsichord Music (1965), and Michelangelo Rossi: Complete Keyboard Works (1967). With J. Dos Passos and H. Fitzgerald, he ed. The Arts between the Wars: A Symposium (1964).
